National Grid
Substations Substations are needed wherever electricity must be converted from one voltage to another. For this project a new substation is needed in the Tower Hill area to “step-down” electricity from the upgraded 115 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines to the lower voltage distribution wires that carry electricity to homes and businesses and other electric customers. A second substation in West Kingston requires modifications.

Tower Hill Substation

The proposed substation will be approximately 150 x 255 feet and will be connected to the transmission system by two new 115 kV transmission lines. The new lines are in addition to the existing subtransmission line in the right-of-way.

Some tree clearing will be required to make room along the existing power line rights-of-way for the new tap lines and to allow grading of the proposed substation site.

West Kingston Substation

In order to accommodate the proposed new transmission line, the West Kingston Substation in South Kingstown must be upgraded and expanded. The work involves upgrading the station to connect to the new line, and replacing some of the existing equipment with new, state-of-the-art equipment. The station footprint will need to be expanded to accommodate the improvements.
