Introduction to Distributed Generation

What is Distributed Generation (DG)? This page provides a brief explanation of the DG for first-time visitors.

Interconnection Process

In Massachusetts, customers interested in interconnecting a DG system to the National Grid's Electric Power System (EPS) must follow the process outlined in the Interconnection Tariff. While all DG customers must ensure their compliance with the Interconnection Tariff, these pages outline the general interconnection process and offer some additional guidance and recommendations.

Simplified Interconnection Process

The Simplified process is for small renewable systems using a single UL1741.1 listed inverter with a system size ≤15kW for single-phase service and ≤25 KW for three-phase electric service.

Simplified Process:

Expedited/Standard Interconnection Process

The Expedited process is available for any DG system that does not qualify for the Simplified process. However, the Standard process is recommended for any non-inverter-based DG systems and large (≥500kW) inverter-based systems.

Interconnection Documents

With numerous standards, regulations, and forms related to the DG interconnection process, National Grid has a central location for up-to-date versions of documents and forms for the interconnection process. These documents are updated periodically, so we encourage stakeholders to visit this page regularly.
