Your Gas Bill at Work: National Grid Begins Upgrades to Arlington Natural Gas System

Work Will Improve Reliability and Safety

WALTHAM, Mass. --- Have you ever wondered where your monthly natural gas payment winds up? A large chunk of it goes underground Ė literally Ė to upgrade and maintain National Gridís pipes, equipment, facilities and services in Massachusetts, so that we can continue to provide safe and reliable service to your home or business.

In July, National Grid began construction work on the natural gas system in Arlington, upgrading 3,255 feet of main along Eastern Avenue this construction season.

This project is part of National Gridís overall plan to invest nearly $113 million for upgrades to its natural gas infrastructure in Mass., replacing more than 135 miles of main through March 2012.

Construction for this project, which began on July 12, will continue through the first week in September along Eastern Ave. from Scituate St. to Cedar Ave. National Gridís contractor will perform the work between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Every effort will be made to minimize disruption to homes and businesses along the route. While streets will remain open, parking will be affected during working hours for the duration of the project. Traffic management plans and police details will be used as appropriate, and the work will be done in close coordination with town and public safety officials.

ďOur job at National Grid is to connect people to the energy they use to light and heat their homes and run their businesses. Itís a responsibility we take very seriously and thatís why we continually invest in our natural gas system,Ē said Marcy Reed, president, National Grid Massachusetts. ďWe are here for our customers and appreciate their patience as we make these critical improvements.Ē

Once the work is complete, there may be a brief interruption of service as homes and businesses are connected to the new main. Once the connections are made, National Gridís contractor will make individual appointments to visit each home and business to check and relight appliances. Residents will be notified prior to any necessary construction on private property.

Customers in Arlington who have questions or concerns may contact National Gridís customer service center toll-free at 1-800-233-5325.
