National Grid Helps Customers in Northern New York Save on Electricity Bills with Temporary North Country Power Discount Program

Partnership with New York Power Authority helps fund discount program

April 28, 2015, SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Beginning May 1, eligible commercial, industrial, and dairy farm businesses will have an opportunity to save on electricity bills with the Temporary North Country Power Discount Program. Implemented through the New York Power Authority (NYPA), National Grid will apply a temporary credit to monthly electricity bills of approximately 2,500 eligible customers in Franklin, Jefferson, and St. Lawrence counties.

“At National Grid, we are committed to helping our customers manage their electricity bills,” said Melanie Littlejohn, National Grid regional executive of Central New York. “The cost savings realized through the temporary discount program is a great way for customers to reinvest that money back into the community and their business. This is another opportunity for National Grid to support the economy of Northern New York.”

Funding for the temporary credit is provided by NYPA and made possible by net revenues produced by the sale of temporarily unused preservation power generated at the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, an international hydroelectric facility, in Massena, New York, that produces some of the cleanest, lowest-cost electricity in North America, NYPA previously offered the temporary discount program in November 2009, which lasted approximately one-and-a-half years before the program closed out.

Through the program, eligible National Grid customers will see a cost reduction in the “Electricity Delivery” portion of their bills. The exact monthly discount will be displayed as a credit on a separate line item labeled “NYPA Temporary Elec. Cr.” Credits will continue to be applied to customers’ monthly bills for up to three years.

In addition to helping local businesses save money with the Temporary North Country Power Discount Program, National Grid has supported the local economy with its suite of Shovel Ready upstate New York economic development programs since 2003. National Grid Economic Development staff work with municipalities, local economic development organizations, chambers of commerce and private developers to identify eligible projects that will help contribute to economic revitalization of the region.
